Aliağa and İzmir: terminals and cargoes
Aliağa, north of İzmir, is one of the busiest cargo areas in Turkey. Steel mills, a refinery, a petrochemical plant, container terminals and multipurpose ports share the Nemrut Bay and the coast around it.

A rough guide only: most terminals handle more than what is listed, and the cargo mix changes with trade, markets and sanctions. Your agent will know what a berth is taking at the moment.
What arrives and what leaves
Aliağa is one of Turkey's main scrap import areas, with several electric arc furnace mills on the bay. Crude oil comes in for the refineries, and fuels, petrochemicals and steel products go out. Containers, project cargo such as wind turbine parts, and general cargo pass through the multipurpose and container terminals. Aliağa is also home to Turkey's ship recycling yards.
Surveys on a typical call
Scrap calls here look much like scrap calls elsewhere in Turkey: draft surveys on arrival and completion, quality inspection hold by hold during discharge, often with the buyer's, seller's and independent surveyors all attending. Tanker calls bring ullage, sampling and quantity surveys. Container and general cargo terminals see damage surveys, tally and lashing checks. See the draft survey and scrap quality guides.
Practical notes
- Aliağa and İzmir have separate harbour masters. Agents handle clearance; many have offices in both İzmir and Aliağa.
- The Aliağa terminals are close together but each is run separately. Name the terminal in your request so the surveyor goes to the right gate.
