Iskenderun: terminals and cargoes
The Iskenderun Bay is one of the busiest steel and bulk cargo areas in the Mediterranean. Several steel mills have their own terminals around the bay, so the ship, the cargo and the surveyors often go to a private berth rather than the main port.
The main terminals
| Terminal | Where | Typical cargoes |
|---|---|---|
| Limakport İskenderun | Iskenderun town | Multipurpose: grain, containers, general cargo, steel |
| Assan Port | Iskenderun | Containers and general cargo |
| Ekinciler (Orhan Ekinci Port) | Iskenderun | Steel mill port: scrap, cement, steel and other cargoes |
| İsdemir | North of Iskenderun | Integrated steel plant: raw materials in, steel out |
| Yazıcı | Payas | Steel mill port: scrap, coal, cement, steel |
| Tosyalı | Payas / Osmaniye side | Steel mill port: dry bulk, steel products |
| Atakaş | Dörtyol | Multipurpose: dry bulk such as coal and fertilizer |
| MMK Metalurji | Dörtyol | Steel mill port: grain, steel and other cargoes |
| Toros Gübre, Sanko, Sönmez Çimento | Ceyhan / Yumurtalık (Adana) | Fertilizer, dry bulk, cement and clinker |
| BOTAŞ | Dörtyol / Ceyhan | Crude oil and petroleum products |
A rough guide only: most terminals handle more than what is listed, and the cargo mix changes with trade, markets and sanctions. Your agent will know what a berth is taking at the moment.
What arrives and what leaves
Ferrous scrap from the United States, Europe and the Black Sea is the bay's best-known import, usually discharged at the steel mills' own berths. Iron ore and coal come in for the integrated plant. Billets, rebar, wire rod and flat products go out. Grain, fertilizer, containers and general cargo pass through the multipurpose terminals, and the mills' berths take other cargoes too.
Surveys on a typical scrap call
On a scrap ship the buyer's, seller's and independent surveyors usually attend together: an initial draft survey on arrival, quality inspection hold by hold throughout discharge, and a final draft survey on completion. Hold condition and bunker surveys are often added if the ship is delivered or redelivered under a time charter here. See the draft survey and scrap quality guides.
Practical notes
- Ships often wait at the Iskenderun anchorage before berthing. Draft surveys are usually done at the berth, where the water is calmer than in the open bay.
- The İskenderun Regional Harbour Master covers the bay. Agents handle clearance; most have offices in Iskenderun town.
- Name the terminal in your request: the steel mills' berths are spread over about 40 km of coast, and the surveyor needs to know where to go.
Companies in Iskenderun
The Iskenderun page lists the authorized inspection companies, the ship agents with an office in the bay, and repair and other service companies working there.
Finding a surveyor
Choose the port on Portiva to see every authorized company there. To get quotes, send one request and we pass it to companies working in that port. Survey companies abroad looking for a local surveyor to attend on their behalf can use the attending surveyor request.
